OTA update G900FXXS1BPCL on Galaxy S5 SM-G900F, not Android Marshmallow but still Lollipop

While we have been keeping on and tracked down the Galaxy S5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the last couple months, and yet we have gathered two reported to official updates landed in Latin America  and Korean Galaxy S5 variants.
  1. Galaxy S5 Official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update Finally Released
  2. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update build G900MUBU1CPC3 in Latin America

Today,  the Galaxy S5 SM-G900F international version has received another over the air (OTA) update dubbed with software build version G900FXXS1BPCL. This update is not the much Marshmallow update yet, but the monthly security patch update for the month of April 2016. You may have to take a look at the following technical details below:

Model number: SM-G900F
Android version: 5.0
Baseband version: G900FXXU1BOJ1
Kernel version: 3.4.0-5508620
Build number: LRX21T.G900FXXS1BPCL
Android security patch level: 2016-04-02
Build date: March 04, 2016

AP: G900FXXS1BPCL
CP: G900FXXU1BOJ1
CSC: G900FOXA1BOJ1

As you may noticed it is quite similar the previous released build G900FXXS1BPC3. Like as I have said, it only brings the new security patches and there's nothing more any new features.

Its now hitting the unlocked Galaxy S5 SM-G900F in England as of this time being but might also going to roll out in select countries in Europe these coming couple of days.

Those who have not received the update yet, you folks might better manually check it via Over-the-air (OTA) update or using Kies. Below are the guides that show you the basic  instructions on how to perform a software update on your Samsung Galaxy S5.

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S5 to Official Android 5.0 Lollipop?

Samsung urges us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedure to keep your  phone in safe.

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failure may cause damaged to your device that might result to what we called “soft-bricks”.  If this happened on your device, it may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Backup important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still running in the official Lollipop released build version and hasn’t been rooted – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there are some certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900F may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

How to Perform an Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)?

This is usually how the carrier branded or locked Samsung Galaxy S5, performs a software update.  This method is Firmware Update through over the air or called as OTA update, which most often  a notification message will directly send out to you from your network provider or Samsung and notifies you that there is a new update available for download.  If you did not receive any notification messages you can manually check for the update instead.  Doing this you may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900F Settings > About Device, tap Software Update.
  • From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon.
  • Touch About device.
  • Touch Software update.

It will automatically tell you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later.

How to Update the Galaxy S5 Thru Kies / Smart Switch?

The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Kies / Smart Switch for PC. You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900F and other Samsung devices running with Android 5.0 Lollipop OS .  Once you installed Kies 3, all you need is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to a PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

Galaxy S5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update build G900FXXU1CPA5 Released by Accident

It looks like the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F will get the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update very soon. A user in France claimed that he received the said Android Marshmallow update into his European version of the Galaxy S5 phone. The latter then revealed some of the screenshots of the said Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update dubbed with build number G900FXXU1CPA5, claiming that Samsung has accidentally released the update to his phone by accident. The said Android 6.0.1 update build G900FXXU1CPA5 is dated back in early January and contains a security patch level dated as January 2016.

Here are the technical details of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update build G900FXXU1CPA5:

Device: Galaxy S5
Model number: SM-G900F
Android version: 6.0.1
Android Security patch level: January 1, 2016
Baseband version: G900FXXU1CPA5
Kernel version: 3.4.0-6953519 dpi@SWHC3805 #1
Build number: MMB29M.G900FXXU1CPA5

Furthermore, The user received this build on the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) over-the-air OTA update.  As you can see on the screenshot above, you may notice that the Apps icons has changed into a rounded square. The firmware build details do look legitimate and there are no signs if this update is just a custom ROM, or a port firmware from other devices.  As you may also see at the bottom of the build details the "SE for Android Status" still claims that it is still "Enforcing" to which basically means that the device hasn't been rooted nor modified.

Samsung might intentionally pushed the Android Marshmallow update with the specific purpose to start testing them on some end user.  Needless however, we cannot predict the exact time to when the official roll-out start.

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to Official Android 5.0 Lollipop?

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failures may cause damaged to your device that might results as we so-called “soft-bricks”. If this happens your device may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still runs on the official Lollipop released build version and hasn’t been rooted – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900F may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made.
